Lesson 2 and Lesson 3

Key enquiry question:

Why do we have human rights? (Protection of vulnerable groups)

Where did human rights come from?

The history of the United Nations

Watch this short video on the history of the UN. As you're watching the video, focus on the following questions. After watching the video, we'll discuss the questions together as a class.

  • Who were the three men who met in Yalta?
  • Where is Yalta?
  • What common goal did these three men have?
  • When did the UN come into existence?
  • How many countries were represented at the meeting in San Francisco?
  • How many countries are members of the UN?
  • What are the aims of the UN?
  • Name the six bodies of the UN.
  • What are some of the benefits of the UN?
  • Do you think the UN could cause any problems? Why?

UN: Podcast

You will create a podcast based on what you now know about the United Nations. You will work in three groups of five (these are the groups you were assigned at the beginning of this unit of work). Each person must speak on the podcast so decide who will say what.

You will make use of Audacity to record your podcast. We've embedded podcasts before but below you will find a reminder tutorial.

Some things you might like to include in your podcast:
  • History of the UN
  • Member states
  • What the UN does
  • Your own opinion on the UN
  • What you would like to know more about
After you've recorded the podcasts, you can embed them into your own personal blogs.

Hana's Story

Listen to this Voki. You will hear the story of Hana Brady. When you have finished listening, go to this website to find out more about Hana and her story.

When you have found out more about Hana, create your own Voki based on Hana's diary entry for the night she was taken to Auschwitz. You can then embed this Voki into your own personal blog.

Hana was Jewish and the Jewish people are an example of one group whose rights were not always respected. The events of world war 2 contributed to the development of the UN and the UDHR.

Respecting human rights

You will now investigate, using the resources provided, two different groups whose rights are not always respected. You will have twenty minutes to research your group and each group will then prepare a powerpoint presentation based on what you found out, with particular emphasis on the human rights issues that each group faces. You will then present these presentations to each other.

Group 1 and Group 2: The Travelling Community
You will research the travelling community. The following resources will help you gather the main points that you want to include in your powerpoint presentation.

  • This website contains lots of information on travellers, their lifestyle and their rights. It is also contains a 'youth' section focusing on young travellers:

Look at the following images, what do they tell you about the travelling community and their human rights?

Group 3: The Roma Community
You will research the Roma community. The following resources should help you:

Here is a video showing the difficulties Roma people face in terms of human rights:

Explore these images. What do they tell you about what life is like for Roma people? Do you think their human rights are respected? Why? Why not?
